Donna 03:05
It’s not the words you say but how you say it I saved a picture where your hair was braided They found your wallet in the cemetery You told your daughter she was ordinary You hate the name Junior your husband loved his computers Your mother never was one the eldest of seven children If you don’t have it then you’ll never give it And I don’t blame you for the way you’re living A little boy was born in February You couldn’t sober up to hold a baby You hate the name Donna You love to judge strangers’ karma We drove from New Jersey the trucks always made you worry Hold my hand now, time to go to bed it’s way too late You hate the name Donna You love to judge strangers’ karma We drove from New Jersey the trucks always made you worry You raised a saint Donna You love to judge strangers’ karma You’re prayin’ for a funeral You sang it like hallelujah You sang it like hallelujah You sang it like hallelujah You sang it like hallelujah You sang it like hallelujah

Wooo, wooo, woo And if the city skyscrapers rise over the island Would you be glad to see Manhattan for once I knew the dream had died JMZ line, Myrtle and Broadway But I’d be glad to see Manhattan for once Woah living life in the city Woah, it will never be pretty Ohh, ohh Woah we can plan if we make it Woah, we won’t let ‘em, they won’t take it from me no no no And if you leave, don’t leave me all alone Cause I’ll be scared I’ll be naked I’ll get cold And I miss my dad and Cleopatra’s sittin’ on the phone So take me back off these streets And we’ll never be apart, together from the start Never, never falling back alone Woah living life in the city Woah, it will never be pretty Ohh, ohh Woah we can plan if we make it Woah, we won’t let’em, they won’t take it from me no no no And if the sun don’t shine on me today And if the subways flood and bridges break Will you just lay down and dig your grave Or will you rail against your dying day

Gloria 03:36
Gloria, I smell it on your breath Gloria, the booze and peppermint Gloria, no one said enough is enough Gloria, they found you on the floor Gloria, my hand was tied to yours Gloria, did you finally see that enough is enough Did you know me when, I was younger then I could take the whole world with me I would find myself, feel alone Heaven help me now, heaven show the way Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don’t lie awake for me Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Gloria, you crawled up on your cross Gloria, you made us sit and watch Gloria, no one said enough is enough Heaven help me now, heaven show the way Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don’t lie awake for me Every night awake, every day alone Get me back on my own two feet I would lie awake and pray you don’t lie awake for me Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Ohhhhh Gloria, will you just decide Gloria, there’s easier ways to die Gloria, have you had enough

On the last time we met, your love was dead You held my hand, bit your tongue Shut me out, spilled my blood all around Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea I took the poison praying you’d feel it too You held your punches back and I left the room Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you All alone, you always felt We dragged you down, gave me hell Made your bed, now you sleep On your own, guess we’ll see Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea I took the poison praying you’d feel it too You held your punches back and I left the room Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you I know that you tried But you were no friend of mine Fallin’ apart You played it the best, a dame in distress Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea I wrapped my neck and prayed that you’d feel the noose I saw the restaurant, table for two Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea I took the poison praying you’d feel it too You held your punches back and I left the room Yeah it wasn’t easy to be happy for you Yea Yea Yea

Every night I saw you there in your old wicker chair You were wrong, I was right Didn’t matter any fight Coffee mug filled it up I always knew what it was Been on your side for years You can never love without crying Is she dead, is she fine Every day, every night Fate has dealt me a lonely blow I say Try to help it only hurt, in the end I made it worse Is she dead, is she fine Every day, every night Give back my keys, give back my chair Take back those clothes you always left on the floor You drove me wild, drove me insane Drank the whole bottle and forgot my name All I ever wanted was a mother for the first time Finally I can see you as the leader of the landslide She left she left the writing’s on the wall Please believe me, I smell the alcohol The only thing I know is that we’re in too deep And maybe when she’s dead and gone I’ll get some sleep You blamed it all on your kids We were young, we were innocent You told me a lie, fuck you for that Fuck all your pride and fuck all your prayers And all this time I waited like a fool and for the first time Finally I can see you as the leader of the landslide She left she left, the writing’s on the wall Please believe me, don’t answer when she calls The only thing I know is that we’re in too deep And maybe when she’s dead and gone I’ll get some sleep Out there on my own, I was feeling so alone Like a poltergeist in the afterlife Faded by degrees, I was shaking in the knees In the aftermath of this broken glass Ohhh

What time was it when you were only 18 years old You crossed the street, you crossed your legs You came across a little cold It was all, it was all fallin’ apart Fallin’ apart What time was it when you were in the 8th grade You brought the bikes up to the high school You spiked a Gatorade It was all for, for the weekend It was all, all still fallin’ apart I didn’t say you’d be better off if you quit Everyone laughed as you held on longer than the rest What made you leave and when you did you left for Denver why? What did you know that I did not That I did not Is it one or is it two or is it three kids now? They mark the time they draw the lines around your eyelids now And is it all still for the weekend Is it all, all still fallin’ apart? I didn’t say you’d be better off if you quit Everyone laughed as you held on longer than the rest What made you leave and when you did you left for Denver why? What did you know that I did not That I did not

My Cell 03:16
Fallin’ in love is wonderful Fallin’ in love and so alone My cell, my pretty little cell Painted windows, there for me Painted windows, so I can see Fallin’ in line is wonderful Fallin’ in love and so alone My cell, my pretty little cell Painted windows, so I see Painted windows, all for me My cell, my pretty little cell My cell, my pretty little cell My cell, my pretty little cell My cell, my pretty little cell All alone, all alone, all alone, all alone All alone, all alone, all alone, all alone

Jimmy Sparks 05:56
Jimmy Sparks went into bars and opened up his mouth Said some things to wounded men that they could not allow When it came to talking he was always on the run Everyone knew what the man had done Oh, he’ll take you for a ride Jimmy believed in the American way A prison guard he worked hard and made the minimum wage He found his freedom locking men in a cage Jimmy loved Bonnie and he fathered a kid A baby boy but the mother had other reasons to live She left the baby with a note on the bed It was a struggle just to cover the rent His jail cut hours and now his little baby was sick He needed money and he needed it quick It was three AM Oh my love oh my love Could you spare my blood, spare my blood Jim woke his son and buckled him in the car They drove an hour from town and found a gambling hall The waitress babysat the boy at the bar After an hour Jimmy doubled his cash He took his kid and his winnings as the dealer just laughed He said they leave but then they always come back That’s a fact Out on the road they caught a stranger in the lights His thumb was up and the son asked if the man was alright Jim said you never give a hitcher a ride Cause it’s us or them It was three AM Oh my love oh my love Could you spare my blood, spare my blood Twenty years gone and now the boy is a man Old Jimmy’s habits got him mountains and mountains of debt And now the sharks are coming back to collect They strip the jewelry and the boots off Jim’s feet They kick Him out of the car and say we’ll give you a week Eight miles from home and only eighteen degrees It was three AM Oh my love oh my love Would you spare my blood, damn my blood Now Jimmy’s son is trying to make his way home His graveyard shift had ended and it was starting to snow He sees an old man walking barefoot alone It was three AM His old man waved his hands with tears in his eyes But Jimmy’s son just sped up and remembered daddy’s advice No you don’t ever give a hitcher a ride ‘Cause it’s us or them ‘Cause it’s me or him It was three AM Three AM

Could it be I was the one that you held so deep in the night On the back staircase you fell to your knees with tears in your eyes All that you suffered, all the disease You couldn’t hide it, hide it from me All alone scared in your room, would you swear there’s nobody home On the bed laying awake as you prayed he’d leave you alone I’ll let the darkness swallow me whole I need to find you, need you to know I’ll be your friend in the daylight again There we will be, like an old enemy Like the salt and the sea And they wrote all these prescriptions, they wrote me off like a heel Yea the doctors with their medicine left me to rock in my filth From the destruction, out of the flame You need a villain, give me a name I’ll be your friend in the daylight again There we will be, like an old enemy I’ll be your friend in the daylight again There we will be, like an old enemy Like the salt and the sea Like the salt and the sea

It’s coming through a hole in the air, From those nights in Tiananmen Square It’s coming from the feel, That this ain’t exactly real, Or it’s real, but it ain’t exactly there From the wars against disorder, From the sirens night and day, From the fires of the homeless, From the ashes of the gay Democracy is coming to the U.S.A It’s coming through a crack in the wall On a visionary flood of alcohol From the staggering account Of the Sermon on the Mount Which I don’t pretend to understand at all It’s coming from the silence On the dock of the bay From the brave, the bold, the battered, Heart of Chevrolet Democracy is coming to the U.S.A It’s coming from the sorrow in the street The holy places where the races meet From the homicidal bitchin’ That goes down in every kitchen To determine who will serve and who will eat From the wells of disappointment Where the women kneel to pray For the grace of God in the desert here And the desert far away Democracy is coming to the U.S.A Sail on, sail on O mighty Ship of State To the Shores of Need Past the Reefs of Greed Through the Squalls of Hate Sail on, sail on, sail on It’s coming to America first The cradle of the best, of the worst It’s here they’ve got the range And the machinery for change And it’s here they’ve got the spiritual thirst It’s here the family’s broken And it’s here the lonely say That the heart has got to open In a fundamental way Democracy is coming to the U.S.A It’s coming from the women and the men Oh baby, we’ll be making love again We’ll be going down so deep That the river’s gonna weep And the mountain’s goin’ to shout, “Amen!” It’s coming like the tidal flood Beneath the lunar sway Imperial, mysterious, in amorous array Democracy is coming to the U.S.A Sail on, sail on Oh mighty Ship of State To the Shores of Need past the Reefs of Greed through the Squalls of Hate Sail on, sail on, sail on I’m sentimental, if you know what I mean Oh I love the country but I can’t stand the scene And I’m neither left or right I’m just staying home tonight Getting lost in that hopeless little screen But I’m stubborn as those garbage bags That time cannot decay I’m junk but I’m still holding up This little wild bouquet Democracy is coming to the U.S.A To the U.S.A To the U.S.A To the U.S.A

An old lady crosses the street And as she waves to me I don’t see her And I know that one day I... Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh, oooooh And how I miss my mother’s mother She became a stranger, but I still love her And I hope, I hope she turns Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh, oooooh Now the day came when we left her We couldn’t say goodbye, and I know that I was wrong But I hope that she knows... Oooooh, oooooh, oooooh, oooooh

Loneliness, oh won’t you let me be Let me be and I will set you free Don’t you think if it was up to me I would choose to be happy Let me go, the king’s on high He picks her out of the crowd to be by his side She walks up, staircase in white She holds her breath, pretends that this is right ‘Cause all this, it don’t come free And don’t become a casualty And live beneath what you were meant to be ‘Cause cowards and heroes feel The same as you and me, it’s real But some will run and others persevere Victory is in the fight In men with hearts will bleed tonight And only rest and rest is what is right

about

Two-time GRAMMY-nominated band The Lumineers are back with their third album, III, a cinematic piece presented as a narrative in three chapters, with each one centering on one main character. III’s concept began while the band was writing in the Catskill mountains, where producer Simone Felice works. Decidedly darker than their previous work in concept, but replete with their trademark expressive vocals and dynamic arrangements, III boldly and expertly goes in an artistic direction not yet traveled by the band.
